The Donut has a long history as far back as cooking with any type of flour and oil can go. In Manhattan (New Amsterdam) time they were called, “olykoeks,” oily cakes. Then in the Mid 1900’s Elizabeth Gregory, mother to a Sea Captain started making Donuts for him and his crew to last over the long voyage with deep fried dough, nutmeg, cinnamon, and lemon rind. She would also fill them with hazelnuts and walnuts to ward off survey and colds. It was said he made the holes for better holding onto them in rough water. Fast forward to 1920 for the first donut making machine. They started coming out faster. In 1931, they came out faster for the Broadway crowd. 1934 Chicago’s World's Fair they came out as "the food hit of the Century of Progress." WWII Donuts were all the rage and given to Soldiers everywhere. In the 1950’s and after has been a war of Donuts between Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme. In 1997 around the world, out of 10.1 billion in Donuts Krispy Kreme make 1.1 billion.
