The American Quarter Horse became famous for sprinting times against other horses that came over from Europe but beat them out in the short races. That is how they got their name. The Quarter Horse came out of being a cross between Thoroughbreds from England being bred with Native horses from different tribes on the east coast. As we moved West these Horses were also bred with other native horses such as the Mustang and domesticated horses from Western Indian tribes. Soon the Quarter Horse became a favorite for many different uses. Ranchers became steadfast lovers of the Quarter Horse due to its usefulness around cattle. It is now used as a Race Horse, Rodeo, Dressage and Jumping. The American Quarter Horse Association was started in 1940 and has been keeping the pedigree records for this amazing horse.
